About Colombia and the Coffee Axis

Colombia’s incredible bird, amphibian, and plant richness allow it to beat out Indonesia on our index. With 1826 species, Colombia has more species of birds than any country on Earth. Colombia’s biological richness is a product of its variety of ecosystems, including tropical forests in the Amazon and Choco, mountain habitats like the Sierra Nevada and Andes, the grasslands of the llanos and páramos, and islands like Gorgona in the Pacific and San Martin in the Caribbean.

About one fourth of Colombia’s territory is considered Amazon rain forest, some of it unique, such as the table mountains of Chiribiquete National Park, known as tepuis.  Located in the heart of the Colombia Amazon, these Tepuis remain to be explored and thus guard many biological and cultural secrets.  Chiribiquete, the largest national park in Colombia, is virtually inaccessible, a condition that has kept it virtually untouched by the outside world.  Another important bastion of biodiversity in this region is Serrania de la Macarena National Park, an espectacualr mountain range, containing what many believe is the most beautiful river in the world: Caño Cristales, among other natural attractions.

The Colombian Coffee Hub or Eje Cafetero  is the area with the highest production of Colombian coffee, famous in the world for its taste and quality. The departments that make up the Coffee Hub are Risaralda, Quindío and Caldas, lands with warm people, beautiful landscapes, hot springs and snowy peaks. It is characterized by endless coffee plantations adorned with immense waterfalls and multicolored trees.

The Coffee Axis is one of the most visited tourist areas of Colombia and almost obligatory stage of any trip that is considered the coffee country par excellence. Colombia is the second largest producer of coffee in the world after Brazil and the marketing work of the Colombian National Coffee Growers Federation has positioned Colombian coffee as the best coffee in the world.
